The University of The Gambia (UTG) opened a chapter of relationship with York St John University in United Kingdom in view to expand of education enterprise among them on Wednesday 9th September 2010.
This development took effect following a visit by Professor David Maughan Brown, Deputy Vice Chancellor of York St John University who signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Professor Muhamadou MO Kah, Vice Chancellor of the University of the Gambia in a meeting hosted by the UTG Relations and Information Office in presence of the senior management of the university.
The scope of the agreement in the twinning accord seek to promote strong bilateral relation among them, staff and students exchanges, joint research and degrees among other areas in the academia.
Prof. Kah explained to his visiting counterpart on the importance of the UTG in developing the Gambia. He described the university as a place where the requisite human resource of the country will be developed and generation of leaders in any field will emerge.
Although young, but “we are a very comprehensive university” with a record of about “1, 500 graduates” in ten year of its existence.
The Vice Chancellor showed his colleague a huge sense of attraction to the partnership deal between them. He hoped to receive students at different levels and staff from York St John University in different fields to learn, and lecture in the University of the Gambia as part of their exchange programs.
Professor Ousman Nyan, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academics of the University of the Gambia acknowledged what he said is a dignified gesture to explore areas of academic importance between the two universities. Similarly, he described the UTG as a power house for the transformation of the Gambia through education and the transfer of knowledge. He said the university wants to develop high quality problem solving on gender sensitive issues, research, and science among other areas so important in the world.
Professor David Maughan Brown, the visiting Deputy Vice Chancellor noted that his university has a lot in common with the University of The Gambia which will propel up their collaboration. The area of widening access to education, teacher training and education institutional integration, he said is a shared mission for both of them.
He said it is a role of universities to challenge prejudice and accommodate and entertain different cultures, faiths and diverging views. Another pillar of responsibility of a university according to Prof. Brown “is producing graduates in to the globalizing world”.
